Support for Entrepreneurs

Through the Knowledge Exploitation Fund (KEF) we support those people who are interested in starting their own business, or who are already self-employed, including students who want to make plans for when they have finished their studies. We also support students whilst they study at Coleg Harlech WEA(N) to help them make the most of their study time.

Every higher and further education institution in Wales is participating in the Knowledge Exploitation Fund project, with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship and enterprising activity throughout colleges and communities.

The word 'entrepreneurship' usually brings a certain image to the mind and may, initially, lead to the misconception that entrepreneurial activity is only for those people who are self employed or who might want to be. However, if we were to use the word 'enterprising' instead we instantly broaden the horizons, because enterprising behaviour can be seen in many areas and jobs, not just in those who are self employed.

The role of the Knowledge Exploitation Fund includes, for example:

Developing opportunities for students to experience entrepreneurial activity within their curriculum area
Facilitating support of business start ups by graduates*
Establishing and supporting networks for local businesses and students
Supporting the generation and sharing of new ideas by staff, students and local businesses.
Through the Knowledge Exploitation Fund support is available to those wishing to start in business and those who have businesses in their infancy stage. Scholarships can be applied for by producing a business plan and successful applicants are awarded financial assistance to help them realise their business idea.

* Graduate means any student achieving a certain level of qualification, not exclusively a degree.
