Social Studies and Pathway to Nursing TutorSian Court
My role involves teaching all aspects of sociological and health related subjects, advising students about their future careers in the caring and social studies related professions. My main experience has been from working with families and young people in Social Services and in a specialised unit for people who have displayed self injurious and associated maladaptive bahaviours. For the last few years I have been a Family Group Meetings co-ordinator, helping families to identify strategies to overcome areas of conflict in their lives. I have also worked as an advocate ensuring that children and young people's needs and rights are met by services in the local area, promoting legal/ children and human rights as a priority. My work with people who self harm included managing a team of staff as well as having a case load of clients whom I worked with individually. This was in collaberation with psychiatrists and other medical professionals to empower service users to utilise individualised alternative coping strategies as part of a detailed care plan. This has involved the work of 'safe tolerance' where safety and risk management of health has been the focus. My teaching experience has included training people on various subjects, including self harm, eating disorders and associated mental health difficulties as well as risk management, advocacy and challenging behaviour.
