Services available to help you study

We understand you may be worried when you have not studied for a long time and we will help you get the most from your course.

How will I know how much support I need?

During your first week at college, we will carry out a short assessment of your study and support needs with you. The results are confidential and will be used to help us provide you with the appropriate level of support.

Study Skills

As part of your course you will be asked to carry out research and produce and present your work in a variety of ways i.e. written, verbal, practical etc. Study Skills sessions are an essential part of your course which provide you with any extra help you need to complete all the elements of your course. These include an introduction to Information Technology, Communication skills and any help you need working with numbers.

Counselling Service

You may at times feel the need to talk to someone who can provide expert help with a variety of problems. If this is the case you may wish to talk in confidence to our Student Counsellor who may also be able to refer you to other external specialist agencies.

Additional Support

If you feel that you have additional needs such as a physical disability or other needs for example dyslexia or mental health, please contact us to discuss your particular circumstances.
We will try to meet your needs wherever it is reasonable to do so, however please contact us as early as possible to allow time for us to respond in an appropriate and timely way.

Disability Statement

Coleg Harlech WEA (N) encourages applications from individuals who have difficulties or disabilities.
The institution's mission statement identifies the principle of inclusive education for all and the imperative of developing the full potential of all its learners. It is acknowledged by the institution that due to the diverse nature of sites used that mobility problems may be encountered by those with physical disabilities in some instances, we will endeavour to meet a student's requirements including relocating the course if possible. After discussion between the student and the institution, if it is felt that the student’s needs cannot be met then they are counselled through to a more appropriate course or institution.

The full statement is available in this document

Skill Wales is the national bureau for students with disabilities, they provide useful information and advice for learners with disabilities on the Skill website

Access

A major programme of work has been conducted to make the College as accessible as possible, despite the inevitable limitations of older buildings built on a hilly site. Lifts are available in the Library, Theatre and Halls of Residence and we endeavour to timetable appropriately to ensure that you will be able to access all rooms required for your studies. Please contact Student Support Services as early as possible if you have any concerns relating to your ability to access college resources so that we can make any necessary arrangements.

Please download the Access Statement for the Harlech site or relating to the Halls of Residence

Self Help

A series of self help leaflets are available here relating to the following issues (pdf documents)

Alcohol, Anger Management, Berevement and Loss, Depression, Eating Problems, Exam Anxiety, Insomnia, Procrastination, Rape and Sexual Assault, Relationships and Sexual Problems, Sexuality, Suicidal Thinking, Surviving Child Abuse, Worrying about Apperance.

Library

The Library has a vast collection of books, including the subjects taught at the College. However, it is much more than a place with a lot of books on shelves, the Library is also an electronic centre where all students have access to the University of Wales online resources. It is a quiet place to work, look for information and collect mail.
