I am from an EEC country am I eligible for a bursary?
If you or your parents are nationals of a member state of the European Community and have been ordinarily resident in the member state of the EEC during the 3 years before the academic year in which your course begins, you are eligible for an award for fees if you meet the other criteria applicable to UK nationals (i.e. age, level of qualifications etc). However you would need to meet the costs of board and accommodation, unless you have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years for reasons other than studying here. You are also eligible even if you have not been here for 3 years but have migrant worker status here through working. Please also look at the busary page.

I am from outside Europe will I be classed as an overseas applicant?
If you currently live outside the European Union, or are living in the UK but DO NOT have
1 settled status or
2 leave to remain or
3 refugee status

You WILL be classed as an overseas applicant. Please contact us if you are unsure.

Can I still apply?
You can apply to come on a course at Coleg Harlech but will NOT be eligible for a bursary, please ask for further information on course fees. (Note some financial help may be available if you come from a developing country).

It is important that you allow plenty of time for us to assess your application and then for your visa application to be considered.
Since 1 September 2007 all nationals of countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who wish to study in the United Kingdom need prior entry clearance (permission to come here) as a student.

What will it cost?
If your nationality is from outside of the UK and EEC and you have not be given ‘settled status’ or exceptional leave to remain in the UK then you will be classed as an overseas student and will not be eligible for a bursary.
In this circumstance you will be asked to pay the overseas rate for tuition plus board and accommodation costs. The 2009/10 rates are as follows
Tuition fees £5,050
Exam fees £170
Student union fee £60
Board and lodging £3,585 (for 35 weeks in term time only)
Total £8,865

Do I need a visa?
You will need a visa if you:

1 - are not an EEA national
2 - are stateless (you don't have a nationality)
3 - hold a non-national travel document, or
4 - hold a passport issued by an authority that is not recognised in the UK.

You should apply for a student visa in the country of which you are a national or where you legally live.

What do I need to do next?
In order to get a visa you must be able to show that you have been accepted on a course of study, therefore you will first need to apply for a course at Coleg Harlech.

In order to be accepted onto a course at Coleg Harlech you will also need to show
1 – that you have a previous track record of study, ie provide copies of certificates gained
2 – that you have achieved an intermediate level English qualification (B2 on the Common European Framework for Reference)
3 – that you are able to pay for your course, support and accommodate yourself and any dependants without working or help from public funds; and
4 – plan to leave the United Kingdom when you complete your studies.
5 – we will also need your passport number.

When we receive your application we will invite you to an interview, if you are not currently living in the UK, this will take place by telephone.

What happens when I’ve been accepted?
Once we have considered your application and decided to offer you a place on a course, we will issue a confirmation letter which will include our licence number, your present address and passport number, details of the course you’ve been accepted onto.
You will need all this information for your visa application.

We will also issue a unique CAS number (Confirmation of Acceptance to Study) and a CAS Statement.

What if I change my mind about coming to Coleg Harlech?
If you decide not to attend Coleg Harlech it is very important that you let us know so that we can cancel your application. You will not be able to apply to another college or university in the UK while your application with Coleg Harlech is still live.

Can I extend my stay as a student after I’ve finished my course at Coleg Harlech?
If you enter the UK with a student visa or prospective student visa, or if you want to study on a course at degree level or higher, you can apply to the UK Border Agency. Their contact details are at end of this guidance. The UK Border Agency will charge you a non-refundable fee for any application to extend your stay in the UK.

Can I go to the UK to arrange my studies?
You can travel to the UK as a prospective student for up to six months to arrange your studies. You will need to show that:

- you intend to enrol on a course of study within six months of arriving in the UK
- you can pay for your course, support yourself and your dependants, and live without working or needing any help from public funds, and
- you intend to leave the UK when you finish your studies or when your permission to stay ends if you do not qualify to stay in the UK as a student.
Note: you should not buy a ticket, or pay all or part of the cost of a study course if your visa application being delayed or refused would mean that you lost your money.
