Orchestral Summer School

Dale Culliford - Cello

Dale was born in New Zealand and began her cello studies at the age of nine. With the aid of an Arts Council Scholarship she came to England in 1981 to study cello with Tanya Prochazka and Steven Isserlis.

Dale has worked with many of Britain’s top orchestras, including the Philharmonia, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, and the Royal Opera where she was a member from 1987 – 1989.

She is currently sub-principal cellist with the Hallé orchestra, and enjoys combining her work there with solo and chamber music commitments. Dale has performed as a recitalist and soloist for many years. She was a member of the Guildhall String Ensemble, the trio Camileon, as well as performing many string quartets and trios.

Her interest in music performance led her to train in the Alexander Technique, qualifying in 1992. She uses this work both in her own playing and teaching, and also working with other musicians.
